State Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory
Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventories report the major sources and activities responsible for emitting GHGs and sequestering carbon within a state in a given year. Commonly reported greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrogen oxide (N2O).
A state’s total emissions are often further broken down by sectors, such as electricity, transportation, and industry, which are reported to highlight the biggest sources of emissions. Inventories can also include historical emissions, typically the baseline year of a state’s GHG emissions reduction target, which allows a state to track progress to date and where additional climate mitigation measures are needed. In addition to sector breakdowns, some inventories include data on emissions by gas and fuel type within each sector and source.
