Bicycle Friendly States

The 2022 Bicycle Friendly State ranking from the League of American Bicyclists assigns rankings for each state based on progress related to: (1) Complete Streets policies, which design and operate streets to enable safe access for all users regardless of age, ability, or mode of transportation; (2) safe passing laws, which define a safe distance for motor vehicles to pass bicyclists; (3) statewide bike plans, which aim to improve conditions for walking and bicycling through transportation investments; (4) bicycle safety emphasis areas, which establish bicyclist safety planning processes in a state’s Strategic Highway Safety Plan; and (5) at least 2% of federal transportation funding dedicated toward bicycling and walking. Each of these five actions are entirely within the control of a state’s department of transportation, governor, or legislature.
