Nebraska
Nebraska is the only state solely served by public utilities, and the state’s three largest electric utilities have goals to provide electricity with net-zero emissions by 2040 or 2050. Emissions are driven by agriculture, with Nebraska ranking 4th in the country for farmland coverage and 5th for agriculture emissions, and statewide emissions have increased 32% from 1990-2022. Almost half of in-state electricity generation is from renewables, with a third of the remaining electricity generated from coal and a fifth from nuclear.
